In this season of remembrance,<\/span><\/p>\n

as the world prepares for the long sleep of winter,<\/span><\/p>\n

our hearts draw closer to the ones who\u2019ve gone before.<\/span><\/p>\n

We open the bundles of grief<\/span><\/p>\n

whether thickly wrapped by the years<\/span><\/p>\n

or jagged edges poking through new, thin cloth,<\/span><\/p>\n

glimpsing the missing who walk at the blurry edge of vision.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But not all we mourn has passed on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our hearts sometimes rattle with the terror of near misses,<\/span><\/p>\n

when the almost-lost are still this side of the thinning veil.<\/span><\/p>\n

We see their ghostly pictures on the ofrenda<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We see friends and coworkers, and imagine what they\u2019d wear to the wake.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We give no time to recover from these brushes with loss<\/span><\/p>\n

Of deaths so narrowly averted, our knees still quake<\/span><\/p>\n

and we listen to their breathing in the night<\/span><\/p>\n

and imagine how different the house would sound without it.<\/span><\/p>\n

We wash the clothes they wore the day we almost lost them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our hands are drawn like magnets to rub the scars.<\/span><\/p>\n

We drive out of our way not to see the cursed-blessed place.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Accidents and attempts, panics and scares, on days so near <\/span><\/p>\n

we might still\u00a0<\/span>turn to those pages in our planners.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when we cry our tears of terror and relief on All Souls\u2019 Day,<\/span><\/p>\n

when we are pressured toward gratitude instead of grief,<\/span><\/p>\n

the hundred thousand living specters squeeze the breath from our lungs<\/span><\/p>\n

at the graves marked but not dug.<\/span><\/p>\n
